Dear Metalogic,

I have a feature question.

I'm no programmer, so please bear with me if I'm talking rubbish.

Are the categories handled as "tags", as opposed to "folders"? The question being - is it possible to assign more than one category to an item?
For example just to illustrate: 3 Euros spent on Gas > Category 1 "Household expenses" Category 2 "Eligible for tax return". In the report I could now sort everything by "Household expenses" and be shocked, how much I spent for the household, at the same time I could easily sort everything by everything eligible for a tax return to hand in to the inland revenue.

Possible or out of the question?

Best regards,
niki

Hi niki,
Categories don't support multiple assignments. That would be a significant change.

My recommendation would be to adopt a pattern for your categories. For example, all categories that are taxable have a "[T]" suffix as in "Gas [T]". Changing the transactions report to allow you to filter via a wildcard (for example "*[T]") would be a much more feasible change.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply!

I see what you mean. That sounds like a good idea, I will do this. Wildcards for the reports would in general be a great thing!

How do I handle past transactions, can I still change the categories for them and how?

Thank you and best regards,
niki

Glad you like the idea. I'll schedule wildcard support in the next version.

For past transactions, you can rename the category in budget view and all associated transactions for that month will have their category renamed. You would have to do this for each month where you want to rename categories.

Hi niki,
Version 8.1 has been released and it includes wildcard support for categories in the transactions report. You can use an asterisk anywhere within a category. For example:
*category
category*
ca*gory
*cat*y*

Let me know how that works out for you.
